The President and Officers of the United Church of Christ have issued a statement offering continued solidarity with partners and people in the Middle East, and pressing for a permanent ceasefire:
“The United Church of Christ continues to walk in solidarity with our partners in the Middle East through prayer, public witness, advocacy, and support for their critical response to the needs in their communities. Israel’s declared war on Gaza has continued for more than 200 days. In this time, over 34,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands more injured, while practically all of the Palestinian people of Gaza face starvation. The violence must end.” Read the full statement.
Additionally, members of the United Church of Christ across the country have developed a Call for a Permanent Ceasefire Now that will be delivered to members of Congress on Pentecost, May 19. All members of the UCC are invited to sign on to the petition:
“We, the undersigned, are members of churches of the United Church of Christ across the United States, who deeply mourn the historical and current violence and injustice in Israel and Palestine. We offer this public statement to call for an immediate permanent ceasefire, the release of all captives including Palestinians arbitrarily detained by Israel, a halt to funding for weapons, an end to the occupation of Palestine, and investment in what truly makes for peace.” Read the full statement.
